Papua new guinea – information

Completing the task of concepts worked well after gaining the information from the surveys from PNG. The information gained helped me to understand their tradition around meal times. They tend to pray before and after meals, but there isn’t any praying that happens while the food is being properties.

The main form of cooking they use is frying, boiling, roasting, and baking (Mumu which is baking with hot stones), but one participant said that they enjoy the Smokey taste that the fire gives the food. The main equipment they use is pan, pots, and fire tongs which are all made from aluminum. The foods mainly cooked are vegetables, fruits, coconut, root vegetables, fish and chicken.
Gaining this knowledge has really helped me to understand the points of design I need to focus on while designing.

Primary research – week 8

This week we meet within our smaller tutorial group – Hannah, Novelyn, Tayla and myself to discuss our primary research and how we feel we got on with sourcing the information over the holidays.

I ginned a very developed understanding of how women cooking over an open fire while completing my primary research. With the help of Mary from volunteer service abroad (VSA) I was able to complete a survey in Papua new guinea a third world country above Australia. I was able to get information on tradition around meals, what foods they mainly cook, how they mainly cook. Also, I was able to get photos of their own cooking stations.

This went well and I felt I gained a good understanding on how to write my opening paragraph. We also practiced our presentations together in the north lecture room. This helped me hugly as I don’t enjoy public speaking and I was able to get some good feedback on what was important information and what did not needed to be said.

Week 6 & 7

–       Hand in

Just handed in my report.

Over the period of the last week created my layout by Monday after. I found this a very hard task as this layout will stay the same for the whole course. I obviously wanted this to be good to show a good representation of my work before you even read it. After changing my idea around 5 times I finally came up with the final layout, from where I put all my writing in. I then went on to create my visual analysis; this took around 2 days of creating.

Thursday I saw the reader-writer again to go over my final draft to make sure the parts I had edited were correct. Then I handed In today. This draft hand in was extremely helpful as I wouldn’t of starting writing until much later, which would have been very stressful.

Week 4 & 5

  • Compile answered questions – keep contacting experts.
  • Primary and secondary research
  • Start drafting first draft of the report.

This week I have finished the bulk of my secondary research; besides the few reports I have to read over the weekend. I am a slow writer so I plan on starting my writing Monday of next week.

I have finished the first draft of my writing the 2000 word section. I meet with a reader writer on Thursday (yesterday) to check over my grammar and spelling. During the course of this weekend and next week, I will be creating my layout and putting my words into the format.

Secondary research

  • Compile all (so far) secondary research / draft answer research questions / list of who to send them to.
  • Keep researching

During week 3 I was focused on my secondary research. We were also put into tutor gourps for Friday class. I have been put into Lyn’s group which I’m excited about. Tayla, Hannah Novelyn and I have decided we will create a mini tutor group and meet up to discus each others work.

Final research questions:

  1. Developing countries and their link to open fire cooking in – Fuel types
  2. Health implications of indoors cooking – Risk of open fire indoors health impact from smoke – enclosed spaces
  3. Who are the cookers / people mainly affected by the open fire
  4. Main countries of interest / country profiles –
food groups / general tradition around meals- living conditions.
  5. Current cooking methods and equipment.

Getting started – week 1&2

Whiling choosing my topic I had some key factors I wanted to focus on while picking my final topic. I wanted to design and research a subject that had not really been looked into or to heavily developed. Also, I wanted to choose a topic that has some meaning behind it e.g; plastic consumption, developing nations.

Complete brief outline.
Look further into research towards cooking/why/how/where/who

During week 2 I did my brief and design criteria V1. I found this task extremely helpful as it gave me time to sit down and think about what I wanted to focus on while doing my report and design. I feel doing this also allowed me to pick and chose the key points to research further into. I also did a weekly schedule which I’m hoping will keep mine on track.
